Origin of the Moon Festival
Along with the sun, the moon has long been an object of human curiosity and worship. It is probable that sun and moon were early held to be deities and that they were the first visible objects of worship, according to the book Sketches of the History of Man.
To the most ancient ancestors of the Chinese, the sun and the moon were considered the chief objects of veneration, according to records dating to the Han dynasty emperor Wu Di (157-87 B.C.).
In ancient Asian mythology, there is a strong relationship between the moon and water. The moon is said to regulate reservoirs and supplies of water. There is a suggestion that the moon produces fertility and freshness in the soil. The moon’s role in bountiful harvests is widely recognized during autumns around the world.
In Chinese celestial cosmology, the moon represents the female principle, or yin. During ancient autumn Moon Festivals, women took center stage because the moon is considered feminine.
The enduring legend of the Moon Goddess, Chang E (Chang E in other transliterations), reflects the feminine principle of yin, as opposed to the masculine principle of yang, which is symbolized by the sun.
San Francisco Chinatown had been celebrating the Moon Festival for over 30 years. Come and participate in this year’s festivities with SF Chinatown Merchants Association!

Sunday Streets is San Francisco’s open streets program with an annual season of events that reclaim car-congested streets for community health, transforming them into car-free spaces for all to enjoy. Event routes are 1-4 miles in length, with fun, free activities provided by local nonprofits, community groups, and small businesses.
Sunday Streets is a program of the nonprofit Livable City presented in partnership with the SFMTA, San Francisco Department of Public Health, and the City and County of San Francisco.
Sunday Streets’ mission is to:
Create temporary open space and recreational opportunities in neighborhoods most lacking
Encourage physical activity
Foster community-building
Inspire people to think about their streets as public spaces
Sunday Streets was inspired by the Ciclovía in Bogotá, Colombia and championed in San Francisco by Mayor Gavin Newsom and the ShapeUp Coalition of San Francisco. Since starting the program in 2008 with two events along the waterfront, the nonprofit Livable City has grown Sunday Streets into one of North America’s premiere open street programs serving 100,000 residents in diverse neighborhoods across San Francisco.
The magic is made possible by the entire Sunday Streets community, including 400+ volunteers, hundreds of local nonprofits and small businesses, dozens of sponsors and City agencies, and the residents of our host neighborhoods.
On August 21st, 2022, Sunday Streets SF will open up the streets of SoMa for an afternoon of fun for the whole family. Taking place on Folsom St from 9th to Main St, neighbors and visitors alike will have over 1.5 miles of car-free streets to enjoy.
