Washing Machine Maintenance Tips

  • Always use detergent made for high-efficiency (HE) machines if you have one, and use the minimum amount (more is not necessarily better). Regular detergents may mechanically or electronically damage a machine. Using the wrong detergent may even void a warranty.
  • For high-efficiency (HE) machines use less or forego liquid fabric softeners (one teaspoon will soften a whole load). The same for bleach (one tablespoon for concentrated bleach, two tablespoons for regular). Remove finished loads immediately. Do not let damp clothes sit in the machine (this provides an ideal breeding environment for musty smells and mildew).
When not in use, leave the door of the washer ajar, to improve air circulation inside the machine.
  • washing1Clean out the washer door’s rubber seal thoroughly with a half-half solution of water and vinegar regularly. Use Q-Tips for hard-to-clean areas. Wipe the inside of the drum with this solution as well.
  • Monthly, pour some distilled white vinegar instead of laundry detergent into the dispenser, and add one cup of baking soda directly into the drum. Run the machine on the hottest cycle, plus an extra rinse. For extreme cases of mildew smells, replace vinegar with bleach and run a few quick cycles with hot water.

  • Clean out the drain pump filter if one exists, every few weeks or whenever you notice problems with the water drainage, excessive vibrations, wet clothes after final spin, longer than usual cycle time, or unusual pauses during a wash cycle. Hair, fabric, and other various bits can get clogged up in the drain pump filter, leading to sluggish drainage of water. The drain pump filter location varies by machine (check your manual for details) but it is usually located at the front and bottom of the machine behind a small trapdoor. Use the drain line to remove any water in the pump first. Ensure that the spin speed you select is appropriate for the load you are washing. Higher spin speeds may mean drier clothes prior to putting them in the dryer, but also means extra wear and tear on the machine’s inner parts, potentially shortening its lifespan.
  • Replace rubber washing machine water supply hoses with steel braided ones to reduce the risk of bursting.

Showerhead Mineral Deposit Maintenance Tip

Hard water can leave your showerhead clogged and unsightly looking. Removing the mineral deposits caused by hard water may not be a pleasant chore, but it is possible.

For fast cleaning action, fill a gallon size plastic bag half way up with vinegar and secure it to your showerhead using a rubber brand or string. Leave the plastic bag in place for around two hours showerheadfor maximum sparkle. The acid in the vinegar will work as a solvent to remove and work away at the mineral deposits until they are gone. You can also remove the showerhead and allow it to soak in vinegar in a bucket or sink until the mineral deposits are removed. With either method, you can use an old toothbrush to scrub away any residue and then simply wipe off with a damp cloth. To clean the spray holes of your showerhead, a toothpick works wonders once the vinegar has begun to dissolve the mineral deposits away.

For really tough mineral deposits, you can also place your showerhead in a pot of water that is reconstituted with one half part vinegar. Bring the vinegar and water solution to a boil with the showerhead inside and boil for fifteen minutes. Remove the showerhead to see if the mineral deposits have become detached; if not, boil for an additional five minutes at a time until the results you are looking for are achieved. Again, you can use an old toothbrush and a toothpick to finish up the cleaning job and then wipe the shower head down with a damp cloth.

Microwave Oven Maintenance Tips

Before cleaning a microwave oven, make sure all controls are off and the microwave oven is cool. Always follow label instructions on cleaning products. Milled soap like dish soap, water and a soft cloth or sponge are suggested unless otherwise noted. Never run a microwave empty.

Microwave oven cavity:
To avoid damage to the microwave oven cavity, do not use a soap filled scouring pad, abrasive cleaner, steel-wool pad, gritty washcloth or recycled paper towel. The area where the microwave oven door and frame touch when closed should also be kept clean.

Average soil; use a mild nonabrasive soap (dish soap) and sponge or lint-free cloth to wipe the surface clean. Rinse with a cloth or sponge and warm water that as the water squeezed out so it is not dripping and dry with a soft lint-free cloth.

Heavy soil; use a mild non-abrasive soap after heating 1 cup of water for 2 to 5 minutes in the microwave oven. The steam should soften the soil. Rinse with a cloth or sponge and warm water with the water squeezed out so it is not dripping and dry with a soft lint-free cloth.Image result for microwave

Remove odors; heating 1 cup of water with 1 tbs. of either lemon juice or white vinegar for 2 to 5 minutes in microwave oven should help remove any lingering odors.

Microwave Inlet Cover;
To avoid arcing and microwave oven damage, the microwave inlet cover should be kept clean by wiping it with a wet cloth.

Turntable; use a mild cleanser and scouring pad to clean the turntable. The turntable can be cleaned in the dishwasher as well. Do not operate the microwave oven without the turntable in place. Return the turntable to the interior of the microwave immediately after cleaning.

Microwave oven door and exterior: Use a mild non-abrasive soap (dish soap) and sponge or lint-free cloth to wipe the surface clean. Rinse with a cloth or sponge and warm water that as the water squeezed out so it is not dripping and dry with a soft lint-free cloth. Glass cleaner and paper towels or a non-abrasive plastic scrubbing pad can be used on difficult spots. Apply the glass cleaner to the paper towel or pad and not directly to the surface.

Control Panel; use a mild non-abrasive soap (dish soap) and sponge or lint-free cloth to wipe the surface clean. Rinse with a cloth or sponge and warm water that as the water squeezed out so it is not dripping and dry with a soft lint-free cloth. To avoid damage to the control panel, do not use chemical or abrasive cleansers.

microwave1Range Hood Exhaust Filter; remove and clean grease mash filters monthly. Grease filters can be soaked in the sink in very hot or boiling water and degreasing dish soap along with a ¼ cup of baking soda swished around with a brush till water is soapy for ten (10) minutes. A non-abrasive soft cleaning brush may be used if needed. Then rinsed with water until it runs clear, let dry and re-install. Filters can also be placed in the dishwasher and cleaned.

Charcoal Filter; here are a few tips on recognizing when a microwave charcoal filter should be replaced: When the filter is fills with cooking grease. If, upon using the vent system, odors detected are different from the foods which are being cooked. This would suggest a build-up of heavy grease that has trapped previous cooking odors in the filter. If the entire surface area of the charcoal filter appears to be shiny, this would suggest the presence of a heavy grease build-up since the filter’s surface normally appears as dull and porous. If these signs are present replace the filter.
